| | ecstatic | ] | The Jim Henson Co. has set Genndy Tartakovsky to direct "Power of the Dark Crystal," sequel to 1982 fantasy film "The Dark Crystal."
Tartakovsky, who created the animated series hits "Samurai Jack," "Dexter's Laboratory" and "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," will involve his Orphanage Animation Studios to take the lead on the CG animation elements for the puppet-driven film.
Film becomes a co-production of Henson and the Orphanage. Lisa Henson, co-CEO of the Jim Henson Co., will produce with Orphanage chairman Scott Stewart. Brian Froud has returned to design the new characters.
Pic's development has so far been funded by Henson. Overseas distribution will be sold during the Berlin Film Festival by Odyssey Entertainment; Henson will secure a domestic distributor by the time the film begins production in late summer.
Annette Duffy and David Odell penned the script.
Set hundreds of years after the first pic, sequel follows a mysterious girl made of fire who steals a shard of the crystal in hopes of reigniting the dying sun.
"The original 'Dark Crystal' was the pinnacle of puppetry; they created characters that were as believable as the ones you see in animated films," Tartakovsky said. Tartakovsky said that unlike in the pricey original film, for which otherworldly sets were built, the puppets this time around will operate amid a CGI backdrop.
"There is a limited budget here, and this will be more artsy, in a 'Sin City' fashion, with characters performing over greenscreen and great backgrounds behind it," he said.
Brian Henson, Ralph Kamp and Louise Goodsill will exec produce. |

| My End of the Year Movie Wrap Up |
[Jan. 2nd, 2006|05:03 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | blah | ] | I've been seeing a lot of these kinds of lists and I got envious so here is mine.
#1 Oldboy If you haven't heard of Oldboy don't worry, a lot of people haven't. This Korean gem is about a man who is kidnapped and put into a privately owned prison for 15 years then finally let out. He is given five days to figure out why he was put in the prison. This is a great story of revenge. Beautifully executed and is the first in the director's "Vengeance Trilogy" followed closely by the heart breaking "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance." And the yet to be released "Lady Vengeance"
#2 Sin City I won't do a synopsis because you have heard of this movie. Frank Miller's Comic book turned best action movie of '05 hands down. The black and white mixed with small dashes of color are worth to see alone. Not to mention the largest A-List cast I have ever seen in a movie. If you haven't seen it, go see it. If you didn't like it... go to hell.
#3 High Tension French films gone "Kick your ass” this psychological horror flick is hands down the best horror movie in years. With great Gore effects and unsettling scenes this movie tears House of Wax, The Grudge, and even Land of the Dead new ones. A definite must see for any horror moviegoers.
#4 Jarhead The beautifully crafted, well-acted war movie/drama about the gulf war and all of the heart ache and pain it caused. From a sniper's need for the perfect shot to girlfriends and wives leaving solders during this seemingly short and almost joke of a war. If it doesn't win an Oscar someone needs to be shot.
#5 40 Year Old Virgin All I have to say is... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA THAT NIGGA IS STUPID! Ahem... go see it
#6 Just Friends/Waiting... I put these two together because I couldn't put one in front of the other. Ryan Reynolds's return to comedy after the disappointing Blade 3 and the cool Amityville Horror. Waiting is about the crazy things that waiters/waitresses actually say and do behind your back and around your food. Just Friends is about a fat kid who returns to his hometown a hot rich music agent and tries to get the girl... fun shit guys count the days till they are on video.
#7 Mr. and Mrs. Smith This is the ultimate domestic disturbance movie. When a married couple find out that they both are the top assassins and then try to kill each other. This is easily one of the funniest movies in a while. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have great chemistry together. And I thought all of the drama between them and Aniston after this movie was hilarious.
#8 The Corpse Bride When I heard Tim Burton was making another claymation type movie I was skeptical. I thought that he is just trying to cash in on another “Nightmare Before Christmas” but it turned out to be one of the better things this year. The animation was so flawless. I quickly just fell in love with this movie. With Jonny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter doing voices there is no stopping my love for this movie.
#9 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Tim Burton and Jonny Depp team up yet again to adapt the classic book. I really never liked “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” for some reason. So I figured this one would be good because it is more true to the book. And I think Tim Burton does a good job with his movies. So yeah this one is defiantly on my shelf.
#10 War of the Worlds Yes yes yes that's right it's on my list. Even though a lot of people didn't like this movie I thought it was amazing. The suspense was great, the acting was superb, and the effects were crazy. Dakota Fanning was a creepy little girl even when she isn't supposed to be. I think Tom Cruise did a great job playing an inexperienced father who is just trying to save his family, instead of trying to save the world. Good job Steven Spielberg on remaking this classic.
Movies I wish I saw in 2005
#1 Mirror Mask #2 Pride and Prejudice #3 Memoirs of a Geisha #4 Walk the Line #5 Brokeback Mountain
Disappointments of 2005 #1 Saw 2 #2 King Kong #3 Harry Potter 4 #4 Fun with Dick and Jane #5 Alexander
The worst movies of 2005 #1 Saw 2 #2 Alexander #3 Dukes of Hazard #4 Deuce Biggalo 2 #5 House of Wax
Close to the top ten of 2005 #1 Kung Fu Hustle #2 Domino #3 Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance #4 Batman Begins #5 The Notebook #6 Red Eye
Things to look forward to in 2006 #1 Hostel #2 Mission Impossible 3 #3 Poseidon #4 Pulse #5 Grandma's Boy #6 Cars #7 The Libertine #8 Curious George #9 The Pink Panther #10 The Hills Have Eyes #11 V for Vendetta #12 R.V. #13 Ice Age 2 #14 A Scanner Darkly |

| The Hostel Premiere |
[Dec. 14th, 2005|11:46 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | amused | ] | Today Bloody-Disgusting reporter (and close friend) Spooky Dan sent in his report from the Hollywood premiere of Lions Gate Films' Hostel which hits theaters January 6th. What makes this report special is that Dan had seen the previous version of the film, and reports that the finished cut is much, much better than the already awesome original version. Read on for the skinny... Hostel Premiere and Party December 12, 2005 By: Spooky Dan The night was buzzing with anticipation at the press and crew screening for Eli Roth’s latest film Hostel. The usual press and Hollywood horror socialites were all in attendance waiting to see what Roth had up his sleeves. As we entered into the Arclight Theater spooky music was playing, and amongst the audience members were three executioners, brandishing sharp weapons, roaming about. At the front of the auditorium were two victims bloodied up and shackled to the chairs they were sitting on. The victims did their best to look scared and frightened while the main executioner, in full costume with a huge helmet, taunted them. Knowing Eli’s penchant for getting dolled up at premieres I was half expecting the iron helmet to come off and Eli himself to be under the costume, but that was not the case. Quentin Tarentino came out to introduce Roth, who spoke briefly about what we were about to see and mentioned that afterwards there would be a Q & A with the cast and key crew members. The lights went down and we were treated to the really fun and brutal film. I saw an early cut of the movie a few months back and I for one can say that it has been skillfully tightened up. A new finale, less of the stoner dudes trying to get laid in the beginning, and then KNB’s glorious gore. Thankfully the MPAA decided that the movie was a fine “R” rating as is and didn’t really make any changes, all the gore and brutality was left in the film. I won't bother to review the film, as there are many reviews out there, but I was happily surprised at how the movie (which I already liked) was improved. Did I mention that the nudity remained intact? There are so many boobs in this film you might think you are watching a soft core Cinemax masterpiece. And it's “good” nudity too! Gratuitous, numerous and generous, Hooray for Eli’s obsession with jugs! At the Q & A, Roth, Greg Nicotero, and four of the cast members were there to field questions about the film. Most of the stuff they spoke about was not really anything new if you have been following the genesis of the project. They did reference that Audition, Mute Witness, and Marathon Man were all heavily influential, the budget was somewhere in the neighborhood of 4.5 million and the film was written in about 2 and a half weeks, and in frustration about other projects not really going in the direction that Roth had hoped. The biggest news was that the original written ending was so ****ed up that almost ALL of the filmmakers involved made Roth change the end to a much more satisfying and easier to stomach finish. Nicotero did express that he liked how ****ed up the original ending was. As the film is not yet out, I won’t spoil it for you… but I will agree with Nicotero that what was originally written was the ending that I wanted to see, even though it’s totally ****ed! Then the after party! Woohoo! The debauchery that ensued will remain a closely guarded Hollywood secret. But, I will say that through the course of the evening it was almost like being at a horror convention. Roth, Quentin, Rodriquez, Landis, Richard Kelly, Garris, Coscarilli, Lustig, Malone, Stamos (yes, even Stamos), Gosling, Whannell Bannister, Nicotero, Berger, and even Vuckovick. And many more were all on hand to witness the birth of the sexy and horrific atrocity that is HOSTEL. The film opens wide on January 6th 2006 -SpookyDan |

| | Limp Bizkit | ] | Since I have been keeping my journal posted and updated with the upcoming horror movie Hostel (which I expect to see all of you in the theatre the day it comes out) I have found an interview between my source and the directer of Hostel's directer Eli Roth. Enjoy! 'I recently got the opportunity to sit down with Eli Roth, writer/director of the upcoming film Hostel, and Barbara Nedeljakova, who plays the beautiful yet mysterious Natalya in the film. What followed was a very interesting and focused conversation about what is sure to be one of the most talked about horror films of 2006. Elaine Lamkin recently got the opportunity to conduct a longer interview with Eli Roth so this is a more conversational piece. The influence for Hostel came in a few different forms for Roth. After a bet with a friend to find the most disgusting website on the net, he received a link to a website in Thailand where you could pay $10,000 to shoot someone in the head. He wasn’t sure if the services offered on the site were real or not, but just the idea that someone created the site was sick and sadistic enough. Roth also heard stories of girls answering to ads to become a cocktail waitress in Odessa, Ukraine who wound up being forced to prostitute themselves in disgusting brothels. These stories and the general idea that there are people out there looking for their next thrill at the cost of someone else’s life are what inspired him to create Hostel. To further illustrate this theme, Roth pointed out the parallel between a scene early in the film where the travelers visit a brothel and its relation to the situation they find themselves in later at the “Elite Hunting” facility. When I asked Barbara Nedeljakova about her involvement with Hostel she commented that she is not normally a fan of horror films but she really liked this script, the plot and the challenge of playing a two-faced character. Roth went on to elaborate that Barbara’s audition blew away the other 300-400 actresses vying for the role and he saw a sophisticated European beauty similar to Monica Bellucci in her. He went on to say “the character has a sweetness and beauty when we first meet her but then she turns ugly and terrifying.” On the process of making the film, Eli and Barbara definitely made it feel like an enjoyable yet terrifying experience. After writing the script in three weeks, Roth went location scouting and found the factory/mental hospital that most of the second act takes place in. The location where “Elite Hunting” takes place in the film is actually a functioning mental hospital that was built in 1915. Eli and Barbara both commented that you could feel the horror and stories emanating from the walls of this real-life hellhole. Even as they breathed in the air, they could feel the dirt and dust in their lungs. A standout shot in the film (which is actually Roth’s favorite) is an extreme long shot from the ceiling of the factory that sees Paxton (Jay Hernandez) and Natalya (Barbara Nedeljakova) walk into the facility. For this shot, Eli and Cinematographer Milan Chadima actually walked through an office section of the facility and kicked through a few sections of wall to accomplish it. The 40 day shoot took place entirely in the Czech Republic and it saw a convergence of cultures between the American and European crew that Barbara commented was “interesting to work with many different cultures who spoke different languages.” Roth commented that it was especially interesting for the American crew who were amazed by the crossroads of cultures found in Prague. The look of Hostel is very distinct and it’s no surprise that Roth thought it through. Eli pointed out 'Audition' and 'The Vanishing' as some of the many influences as far as look and feel go. He wanted the beginning to look very clean and fun with lots of dolly shots and soft colors as the travelers have fun in Amsterdam but as they get into trouble, the colors drain away and we are left with a dark and grim atmosphere that Roth described as an “Eraserhead-esque” nightmare. He also said that the animation of the Brothers Quay was an inspiration for the look. Roth actually told Nedeljakova to not see Cabin Fever before reading the Hostel script but she has seen it since. Nedeljakova further commented that she generally doesn’t like gore and violence in films because she has seen enough in real life but she doesn’t mind how it’s used in Hostel and she said it was fun to watch from behind the scenes. As for future plans, Barbara Nedeljakova is pursuing other roles and Eli Roth is fully focused on Hostel until he is done marketing for it sometime next year, with a possible break to ride his horse in Iceland. Hostel is in theaters on January 6, 2006.' |

| | Tool-Eulogy | ] | Holden: I love you. And not, not in a friendly way, although I think we're great friends. And not in a misplaced affection, puppy-dog way, although I'm sure that's what you'll call it. I love you. Very, very simple, very truly. You are the epitome of everything I have ever looked for in another human being. And I know that you think of me as just a friend, and crossing that line is the furthest thing from an option you would ever consider. But I had to say it. I just, I can't take this anymore. I can't stand next to you without wanting to hold you. I can't, I can't look into your eyes without feeling that, that longing you only read about in trashy romance novels. I can't talk to you without wanting to express my love for everything you are. And I know this will probably queer our friendship - no pun intended - but I had to say it, because I've never felt this way before, and I don't care. I like who I am because of it. And if bringing this to light means we can't hang out anymore, then that hurts me. But God, I just, I couldn't allow another day to go by without just getting it out there, regardless of the outcome, which by the look on your face is to be the inevitable shoot-down. And, you know, I'll accept that. But I know... I know that some part of you is hesitating for a moment, and if there is a moment of hesitation, then that means you feel something too. All I ask, please, is that you just, you just not dismiss that - and try to dwell in it for just ten seconds. Alyssa, there isn't another soul on this fucking planet who has ever made me half the person I am when I'm with you, and I would risk this friendship for the chance to take it to the next plateau. Because it is there between you and me. You can't deny that. Even if, you know, even if we never talk again after tonight, please know that I'm forever changed because of who you are and what you've meant to me, which - while I do appreciate it - I'd never need a painting of birds bought at a diner to remind me of. Well, there have been rumors, speculation and more rumors, but it looks like Steven Spielberg himself has decided to open up about the latest on the upcoming sequels Indiana Jones 4 and 'Jurassic Park 4'. If you are a fan of either series, I don't have to tell you to read on and even if you aren't, you should still take a peek, this is certainly some interesting news to say the least. Development Hell <http://www.development-hell.com/news_detail.php?idnews=810> Reports: Director Steven Spielberg recently attended a Q & A session at the University of Southern California film school, where he divulged a number of different things about the projects that he is currently working on. Scooper ‘Napier‘ had this to say about the event: Spielberg was TOTALLY AWESOME and extremely down to earth and nice! He talked about a bunch of different things but here are some highlights from the man himself: -He is working with writers on the script to Jurassic Park IV and says that there is going to be a big dinosaur sequence where a pack of motorcycles are forced to out run a bunch of Raptors. Spielberg said that just with the other films in the series, he‘s going to “cherry pick” certain scenes he loved from the books and include them in the new film. -Not much was said about Indiana Jones IV except that Lucas and Nathanson are locked away writing the script, and that Harrison Ford will be returning. He did casually mention that Lucas wants to simultaneously release Indy IV in 3-D. -Spielberg said that he would like to one day remake one of his earliest films Sugarland Express. -Finally, Spielberg said that has not and does not plan to develop a total film emersion technology (he was just as surprised as everyone else that that was a rumor), and said that he believes a barrier must exist between the film audience and the film itself. He also mentioned that he saw tests that were done to convert Casablanca, Top Gun, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Laurel and Hardy into 3-D and said that the industry is going to have to be very careful about what they move to make 3-D; because classic films like Casablanca looked horrible! |
